Welcome to Farmhouse Stay Herbaltei
Farmhouse Stay Herbaltei is a cozy, traditional Japanese-style inn located in the Kanbayashi district, in the eastern part of Ayabe City, Kyoto Prefecture. Even today, this countryside area is dotted with charming traditional houses, offering a peaceful, idyllic landscape surrounded by rice fields and Satoyama (nature-rich hills). In 2012, we relocated here from Osaka. Together as a couple and with our old dog, we enjoy a slow-paced life growing our own vegetables in the field, and cultivating herbs and flowers in our 1,000-square-meter garden. Although it is a quiet countryside with nothing but nature, we invite you to relax and enjoy a soothing "herbal time" with us.

Stroll through the fragrant garden
With the Satoyama hills in the background, we cleared a wasteland on the slope and planted herbs and perennials little by little. Winters here can drop to -8°C, while summers bring relentless, scorching sunshine. We don't water the plants at all, leaving them entirely to the natural rain. Despite such a harsh environment, the plants that took root in this soil have now grown remarkably large. It is a garden where beautiful flowers bloom and fill the air with fragrance season after season. We highly recommend taking a gentle stroll in the early morning or at dusk, while listening to the sweet chirping of wild birds.
Relaxing in the Garden House
Next to the main house, there used to be an old storage shed with a rusty corrugated iron roof. Through gradual DIY renovations, we have transformed it into a cozy garden house. Outside the window, a beautiful view of our vegetable garden and herbal fields stretches out. Here, you can enjoy hands-on herb workshops, have breakfast, read a book, and so on... please spend your time just the way you like.
Old house and wood stove
Life in a traditional Japanese home with over a century of history brings extreme cold in the winter, yet offers a wonderfully cool retreat in the summer. Even during the height of summer, a refreshing breeze sweeps down from the hills behind the house, ensuring the mornings and evenings remain remarkably pleasant. From November through March, we gather around the wood-burning stove for warmth. Simply watching the gentle sway of the flames brings a profound sense of serenity. Working up a sweat while chopping firewood is one of those quintessential countryside pleasures you can experience here.
